"My friend Scott had a hankering for Taix, so I've been here with another buddy of him for dinner so we could hang before he returned to the east coast. The building on the outside looks like a decrepit relic from the old 30s and the interior has nothing to evoke french style, but the decor radiated a cool vintage LA Vibe from jateryear. The bar lounge area looked a bit like a 1970s swinger’s Den with his caramel bar chairs under dimming light – Boom Chica bow bow! But Taix, just like our server Bernard's dry French accent, lacked that the ne sais quoi... In the last 10 years I had many land and Provencal dishes in France over countless visits, and what I saw and definitely had American versions of “land French food.” Granted, you pay for what you get, as the prices are incredibly reasonable, so I can't really complain. Eating is decent enough, but no way would I drive my ass this way if I had a wealth of other French restaurants near the Westside where I work. The food tasted more “continental” than “fresh” for me. I had the Truite poêlée aux amandes – Butterflied fresh trout with almonds and nutty butter. One of the reasons why I am a francophile is because of the Beurre (butter) eyepopping series in France. This dish tasted as if they had used pure old butter instead of an unmistakable flavored butter. Lemon really would have awakened the flavors in this dish, which I added at the end of my meal. At this point, the lemon juice was really the stuff that this dish needed. The almonds really didn't do much for me. My friend Scott had the evening with salmon and our other dinner companion had the Blanc de poulet grillé or otherwise known as the “Jon” which is a grilled chicken breast with grainy mustard, capers and onion butter sauce. Neither of them did a great to do about the taste of food, but both ended their plates over simple entertainment. This was a strong contrast to the previous week when we were in the Aroma Restaurant (Italian) on the street. All these dinners were about $14.95, and for an additional $4, soup and salad can be added. Truly, no bad portions and quality for this price class. Our soup was vegetable minestrone. Anyway, it had better. Hmm, too bad it was not ratatouille, a vegetable soup from the south of France, which is one of my favorites. Salads were nothing special. You really need to enjoy salad salad salad. Dresses were common. Taix is supposed to be French country style, and I know that I have a preference for Provencal cuisine, the Taix is clearly not. So it is quite possible that my assessment is biased. Taix is simply the best table d’hôte....but I wouldn't mind to review the bar and happy hour scene."

"I don't know what kind of rolls they were...but I do remember almost eating the bag of 4 long hotdog like buns/rolls. So soft. It really melted in my mouth, I had to look twice to see if I had actually bitten off a piece? Mmm mm. Yes hit the spot, the market had nice figs and some boursin cheese. Spot on. Oh and I ate 2.5 buns before I stopped."
